Confessions of a Dangerous Mind is not worth a review.
The latest Logic project sounds like a corny caricature of J. Cole's KOD, parsleyed with a clear lack of understanding and exploitation of mental health. If the redhead kid from Lemonade Mouth kept rapping, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind would be his peak.
But this isn't Lemonade Mouth; this is Logic--the Maryland rapper that gave the world Bobby Tarantino and The Incredible True Story. Neither project was a classic, but they were respectable.
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind deserves no respect and serves as an example of what uninspired creativity, rewarded mediocrity and being sheltered by an uncultured audience could do to a once-promising rapper.
I forgave Logic for traumatizing his racial identity because maybe it really was a pressing issue for him. I forgave Logic for lazily exploiting mental health for profit on "1-800-273-8255".
Logic can not be let off the hook for this album.
With the resources Logic has at his disposal, it is almost impossible to make an album as bad as Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. It may be best if he goes missing for a while to find himself and rekindle any semblance of his early creativity.
The Good
Old Logic is in there somewhere, and every now and then he grabs the mic.
"Lost in Translation" and the opening album-titled track serves as proof of that. Although some of the lyrics are oversimplified, these two songs are the only time throughout the entire project where Logic comes off as genuine.
"Y'all know the regimen, R-A-TT-P-A-C-K, Rappin' like back in the day," raps Logic on 'Lost in Translation'.
Unfortunately for Logic and everyone who presses play on Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Logic only raps like his past self on the first and last tracks of this 16-song album.
When Logic first started to make a name for himself it was because of the same pure rap ability he showed on the aforementioned songs, but mainstream success and the money that accompanies has left that Logic to settle for just two songs on the entire album. The nostalgic authenticity of two songs are the only good thing Logic brings to the album.
YBN Cordae's verse on "Mama/Show Love" is the clear highlight of the album, and the album's cover art is cool.
The Bad
There were several moments throughout this project where I genuinely had to pause, look up at my ceiling and ask 'why am I doing this to myself? After my ninth cringe-induced pause, I figured I would just list them out.
Cringe Counter:
1.)"Because you came out of my balls, nigga"
2.)"I got bitches, I got hoes, I got rare designer clothes" in a mocking autotune
3.)Eminem explaining his verse within his verse for half of his verse
4.)"I don't get likes like they get likes, so I'm gonna slit my fuckin wrist"
5.)"That social media shit is a contest, if I ain't winning then I am depressed and I feel less than, I get stressed"
6.)The initial verse delivery on "Clickbait"
7.)Every lyric on "Clickbait"
8.)Singing "I can promise it's depression"
9.)Including "Fifty thousand on my wrist, Red Octobers on my feet" in the hook after dissing rappers for bragging about their rare items just three songs ago.
10.)"Bobby get bitches 'cause bitches love Bobby, and all of the bitches say Bobby delicious"
11.)"Skinny niggy-giggy"
12.)"Old girl wanna give the boy head/How about a little bitty self-love instead/I can't fuck a hoe, I'd rather self-love instead"
13.)"I'm fellin' like Kid Cudi, a little crazy"
14.)"I ain't bi-polar, Kanye make me wish I was/'Cause that level of genius, the meanest"
15.)*beat lowers for a line that will leave an impression* "You got a Rolex but can't tell the time 'cause you stupid as fuck"

22.)"Can't fuck with no girl that be all in the 'Gram/Tryna post all on me and Spaghetti" What does that even mean Logic?
23.)"'Oh my god, children, it's the 1-800 guy'/But my door's suicide. yeah, I'm too alive"
24.)Every single element of "Don't Be Afraid to Be Different"
25.)Every single element of "Don't Be Afraid to Be Different"
26.)Every single element of "Don't Be Afraid to Be Different"
27.)Every single element of "Don't Be Afraid to Be Different"
28.)Every single element of "Don't Be Afraid to Be Different"
29.)Every single element of "Don't Be Afraid to Be Different"
30.)"Who's bi-racial only in his penis"
31.)"Black and white, you ain't half of the nigga I am"
32.)"I am the best in the field like a slave"
33.)"'Cause Black is beautiful/Snappin' so hard I might snap a cuticle"
Despite cringing 33 times, the moments of cringe came in second in terms of the worst parts of this project.
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind has no thematic direction whatsoever.
Half the album sounds like a project mused around the worst elements of J.Cole's KOD, and the other half sounds like an old bi-racial man waving his fist at kids. Even the name, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, has little correlation to the content of the album, as Logic only takes the confession approach on the first track.
The Verdict
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind sounds like a rich artist devoid of creativity.
Social media clearly plays a large role when it comes to Logic's outlook on life, and that seems to have found its way into his music. From meme'ing himself before the internet gets the chance to treating the n-word like a personality trait, Logic has let the opinion of the masses kill his creativity.
With this being his third disappointing album in a row, it may be time for Logic to take a break from music.
