More Than a Rapper

Frank Hoensch/Redferns

Good Ass Intro, I don't have one.

Chance The Rapper isn't Jesus, or this generation's Kanye. Take Chance for what he is, a great guy, making great music, in a fashion that has never been done before.

Every rapper raps about their city. But how many rappers actually donate to their city? To answer that rhetorical question, Google the vague keywords 'rapper donates to city'. Chance The Rapper is the only name to pop up until page 10. Of course, other artists donate and have their own foundations, but none seem to impact the community like Chance. Big Sean, for instance, has his own foundation and doesn't have a verse where Detroit isn't mentioned (not a fact), yet he isn't viewed in the same light as Chance for being his city's savior. Chance has met with Chicago's mayor about public education, and after getting a negative response he donated a million dollars himself. Maybe Chance is Jesus.

Alright I'm 98% positive Chance The Rapper isn't Jesus. But I'm 100% positive Chance is on Jesus's playlist, along with 'Jesus Walks' and all things Lauryn Hill. But that's another day's topic.

Via/Grammys

Chance The Rapper is 24, and already has three Grammys. He's the first rapper to win 'Best New Artist', since Lauryn Hill did 1998. From 10-day to Coloring Book, he hasn't released a disappointing or even average project since he was Instrumentality. Instrumentality, Instrumentality, Instrumentality. Terrible name. 10-day started him off, Acid Rap shot him up the radar, and everything that he's dropped recently has sparked claims of him destined to be one of the greatest. Coloring Book and Surf, two of Chance's greatest works, give off an ever-present soul and gospel vibe. Chance ran with that vibe by literally rapping with a choir behind him, and even praying in some verses. Imagine a not corny 'Let It Shine' Tyler James Williams(Truth) got that rap deal and ran with it. Chance the Rapper is Truth, just minus the record deal.

Chance The Rapper hates labels. Very ironic. Think about it.

'No Problems' is a literal and symbolic fuck you to all labels. The hook threatens all labels to back off, and then it went on to scare labels even more by winning a Grammy. Record labels should be scared of more than just that one song though. Labels everywhere should be shaking at the thought of a new era of artist independence, led by Chance. He's encouraging other artists to stay independent, while being a prime example of just how far an independent artist can go.

Chance is creating great music, crafting Chicago's future, and changing the way other artist's creations get handled. He's more than a rapper. *roll credits*
